A seemingly gentle start, as advocated by many modern course architects, but for the hooker and puller there is out of bounds on the left (for right handers that is) and for slicers and blockers there are trees on the right. As the green is tucked close to the out of bounds, it would be sensible to play the second shot to the centre of the green, unless the player has “warmed up” sufficiently prior to teeing off.

If you have the right kind of well grooved swing, or can draw the ball at will, go directly over the trees by all means, but this is the hole at which the stream that meanders through the course comes into play for the first time, so danger lurks. If you play it the safe way and “dog leg” it, spare a thought before you play your second shot, for it was in that vicinity that Dr. A. Mossman smacked the cleek shot from a field on the left, which gave birth to the Club. A Risk and Reward hole, Eagles and Birdies are common place as are fives and sixes. Beware of the out of bounds to the left and at the back of the green.

The first of five short holes on the course, but well bunkered and cambered so that a well placed tee shot is needed to get par in regulation, and club selection can be difficult in the wind. A good short hole.

Eighty yards shorter than the tenth, with which it runs almost parallel, but no less a test. Trees and a bunker on the left make going right a temptation, but that stream is out there on your right all the way down to the green. But past the sluice gate and beyond, the stream is out of bounds. Off the tee hug the bunker on the left of the fairway to leave an easier angle for the second shot. One of the most demanding holes on the course.

A bit longer, certainly, but a bit like the first in its seemingly apparent simplicity. There is a ridge and bunker at the dropping zone of a good drive and some undulations afterwards. When you make it in two, don’t waste it. Take a particularly careful look at the line of your putt. A difficult green to read, a good golf hole that rewards good play.

Now here's a little beauty! Little because it’s the shortest of the par threes’. Trees form a relatively narrow path to a pond full of bulrushes and lily pads in front of the green. The green is particularly well bunkered and, although it is receptively sloped, you can face a tricky putt. The club selection is made more difficult as the wind tends to swirl in this part of the course.

Slicers beware! Too far right from the tee at this long par four and you can be in trouble. There is a right hand dog leg after the ridge and the green is tiered, which makes it imperative to get close to the pin. Another hole which rewards a ball placed to the left of the fairway off the tee to secure the easier second shot. A tough par four warranting stroke index one.

Another long four at which a precision drive is especially important, avoiding the bunker on the right of the fairway and the trees on the left. Again, a long second shot is needed but a well placed bunker front left is there to trap a ball drawn or pulled. Most will be pleased to walk away with a par on this excellent par four.

The late Harry Longhurst nominated this among his favourite holes. Clearly he did not suffer from claustrophobia. A raised tee points you down a narrow avenue of trees to a long green set in a bowl. You can get a kind bounce from right or left if you are long enough but what lies between tee and green is intimidating. All that is required on this tough par three is a good straight long shot! Again a swirling wind makes clubbing difficult.

Now you have to work at the only par five and the longest hole on the course. Here’s that stream again ahead of you from the tee and on your left all the way down to the green of a fairway which initially curves left. Getting on in two is not uncommon but for the majority a good three shot hole, the third shot being played to a well guarded green.

Take a deep breath unless you are uncommonly fit, to tackle this right angle dog leg left. The corner is guarded by trees which preclude an attack uphill to the green, even a strategically placed tee shot leaves an extremely tough second shot to a hidden green. Take at least one club extra for the second shot up the hill and over the gully that is the relic of one of the gravel pits over which the course was built. Hole out and then get your breath back while admiring one of the finest views afforded by any golf course in the area. A challenging golf hole that can make or break your medal card.

Now it’s downhill all the way. With a sloping fairway to the right, an errant drive can be swept away into a difficult position. Even when you are straight, there's that stream again, guarding anything miss hit or under clubbed just short of the green. A drawn tee shot would be helpful on this hole but be careful of the out of bounds on the left all the way down the hole. From a good position you should be able to play a lofted second shot into the green but for the higher handicap if you’re in doubt that you cannot carry the stream, lay up.

If you have negotiated the 12th successfully this might look easy but there are trees and bunkers to swallow up slack shots. A slight down hill hole increasing the difficulty in club selection.

In terms of length, the easiest par four on the course, given favourable conditions it can be driven but there will be many other occasions when you don't get there in one. Then, a good second shot is essential because of the slight hog's back nature of the green which also demands careful “reading”. If the green is missed with the tee shot a good short game is paramount if a birdie is to be secured.

Out of bounds on the left and trees on the right make the drive particularly important. Only a long straight one will give you the benefit of a “look” at the green from the corner of the slight, right hand dog leg. The narrow entrance to the green guarded by bunkers makes a high trajectory second shot essential if a birdie chance is to be had.

Even on the best of days, this is the kind of hole at which, standing on the tee, you would be happy to say: “I'll take a five and walk down to the 17th”. There is trouble left and right, the fairway drops away the nearer you get to the green. The green itself is set on a little plateau. It runs as tightly as it could be to the out of bounds on the left. This tough hole requires a well positioned tee shot to enable the longer hitter a chance of hitting the green in two, if the green is missed to the right a very tricky up and down awaits.

“Entertaining” is probably a tongue-in-cheek description of the last of the course’s testing short holes. Here, that stream which comes into play so many times seems to be everywhere and there is a good chance that you will be scooping your ball out of water if your tee shot is at all wayward. Should you miss it with your first, the stream is almost sure to influence your second shot. One of the best if not the best hole on the course. A high flying tee shot is required to clear the stream and land softly to hold the green that slopes from front to back away from the tee. Another short hole that simply requires a good shot.

The target for the drive is particularly narrow bounded by trees on both sides and a large bunker to the left. A straight drive is required. From that point the hole dog legs left and the second shot should be played shorter below the hole rather then past as chipping or putting back to the hole on this sloping green could be perilous.
